1) Alyssa, auxiliary verbs are be/do/have/will specifically when they are followed by another verb.
Examples: I will go to the movies.
I do notlike grapes.
I had already eaten dinner.
Were you doing homework?
In each of these case there are two verbs. The bold one is the auxiliary, as it changes the meaning of the second italicized verb (into a question, or past/future tense, or negative statement). That's why auxiliary verbs are also known as helping verbs.

2) Also am curious to know whether spaces/punctuation count as characters!
Also I just wanted to confirm that spaces do not count as characters, but punctuation does?
