Lesson 5: Reporting Findings

  • 1.Choose a website with moderate complexity and attempt to assign a “yes”, “no”, or “N/A” (not applicable) to each of the questions listed in the evaluation chart.
  • 2.Go through the sample audit and create a boilerplate document based off the comments in this report.
  • 3.Create a report template.
  • 4.Fill in a guideline checklist table for the website you chose in 1.

General Comments

The Chatelaine website presents information in an organized manner. However, it lacks in alternative text, and it is inaccessible through keyboard alone. Proper markups for headings order and keyboard traps should be reviewed.

1.3.2: Meaningful Sequence A Fail Though the headings are presented in an organized sequence on the surface of the website, WAVE (web accessibility evaluation tool) have detected some skipped headings, which may cause some organizational problem for individuals accessing the website using voice over or keyboards only; which may make it confusing to navigate through the website
1.3.3: Sensory Characteristics A Pass Sensory characteristics are not relied upon.
1.4.1: Use of Color A Fail Though headings distinguish link and surrounding text by becoming underlined and/or having a small box appearing with the title of the clickable link, the main webpage dividers/sections (ex: recipes, health, home Décor..etc) use colour alone to distinguish it is clickable; which may make these articles inaccessible for some.
1.4.2: Audio Control A N/A There is no audio.
1.4.3: Contrast (minimum) AA Pass The contrast level is generally sufficient, however there are a few minor instances where the contrast level was too low. These instances can be found at the bottom of the right side of the webpage, under the label of the “best of chatelaine”, the categories which the upcoming articles are listed under, such as horoscope, shop and chatelaine 10-Minute Fitness; the contrast level between the white lettering and the bright pink background is too low.
1.4.4: Resize text AA Pass Zoom is well-supported.
1.4.5: Images of Text AA Pass The few images of text that are being used are logos of recommended sites which can and are being presented through alternative text as well, which are located at the bottom of the website.
2.1.1: Keyboard A Fail This website is not operable while using keyboard alone.
2.1.2: No Keyboard Trap A Fail Keyboard gets trapped at the beginning at the search bar of the website; which is the only element accessible by keyboard.

4.1.1: Parsing A Pass? There were 10 parsing errors found using the W3C Validation service. These may be interfering with assistive technology and should be corrected.
