Lesson 3: Evaluation Tools

1.Choose one automated tool to inspect a page of a website.

2.Use a screen-reader, either VoiceOver or NVDA, to read and interact with a website.

3.Attempt to interact with a website using the keyboard only. Can you navigate to and operate all of its functions?

Checking a popular and useful website I frequently visit WebMD: http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/default.htm

1.I used AChecker as the automated tool to inspect this WebMD website page. AChecker found 57 known problems, and 1085 potential problems.

  • AChecker points out:
  • -Text alternative missing in non-text content such as their “WebMD” logo image, which are repeated quite a few times on the web page.
  • -There are associated labels missing in the input element section.
  • -There are also text written in italic which may be hard for some individual to read, therefore making the text resizable would help.
  • -The header following h3 is incorrect.
  • - Lastly, the id attribute that is being used is not unique.

2.I had a hard time using NVDA. It is also quite confusing.

3.To interact with the website simply using the keyboard only, was simply impossible. I was able to go to different labels on the web page, however the moment it got to the search bar option, it was completely lost after that. Though a google web page was easier to navigate through, I was unable to get the screen reader to actually read the text other than the labels.
